The Swinburne University of Technology is a well-known name both in Australia and abroad. The University was established in 1908 by Hon’ble George Swinburne. Back then it used to be known as the Esteem Suburbs Technical College. Swinburne received the University status in 1992. Besides technical education, the University offers higher education in a number of disciplines.

The academic year at Swinburne consists of two semesters. The first semester runs from February to June. The second semester is held from July to November.

Swinburne Residential College

Swinburne Residential College provides accommodation assistance with home stay and rental assistance with flats. Swinburne assistance is available through the student counseling services, accommodation, international student’s club, computer services and career information advice. There are also a students’ union, library facilities and sports association.

Courses

Swinburne attracts students from all over the world. Its courses in social sciences, business, humanities, science and engineering are particularly popular among students. The University offers both undergraduate and post graduate degree courses. School leavers can choose from a variety of undergraduate degree programs as well as a wide range of TAFE programs. The University also offers a wide range of postgraduate courses ranging from graduate certificates through to PhDs in the areas of Applied Science, Business and Innovation, Design, Engineering and Technology, Health and Human Services, Informatics (Computing and Information Technology), Multimedia, and Social Sciences and Arts.

The various levels of qualification awarded by Swinburne include Certificate of Education, Certificate IV, Certificate III, Certificate II, Doctoral Degree, Master Degree, Foundation Year, Graduate Diploma, Associate Diploma, Graduate Certificate I and Bachelor Degree.

Undergraduate students can work closely with industry through the Industry Based Learning (IBL) program which is a part of most degree courses. Through the IBL program students acquire valuable paid work experience before graduating and it often leads to full-time employment opportunities with the same employer after graduation
